CrossFit Khrusos: Come as you are

by | Mar 12, 2019

It’s been almost two years since I first joined CrossFit Khrusos, and I can say without a doubt it has changed my life. I know you hear it all the time; a person joins a gym, they change the way they eat, they start changing their mindset and BAM! Just like that, they’re new people. Now, my journey to this new way of life wasn’t that simple, but it did start by answering one simple question: “Would you like to join my box?”.

In the world of CrossFit, we don’t like to call our places where we go to workout gyms, we call them boxes. As a mixed raced millennial woman majoring in communications, the thought of joining a “box” or the fact that I would want to put myself in a box wasn’t very appealing. But here I am a year later, telling you why you should definitely put yourself in a box, at least a CrossFit box.

Have you ever heard the expression “don’t put me in a box”? It means when you are stereotyped or stigmatize or judged based on a feature of some sort such as skin color, gender or, the fact that you wear glasses, etc. The members of Khrusos have created a culture of accepting you in all your physical forms, mental and emotional problems. The members at the box have become some of my best friends that I know I will have connections with for life. When you come into this box, whether you are black, white, gay, lesbian, atheist, older then 54, you find a group of people to connect with and to cheer you on through a tough workout.

My two years at Khrusos hasn’t always been easy, but it would be a lie if someone told you it was. Throughout my year, I questioned whether or not CrossFit was right for me. I asked myself “is this really doing anything for me?”. There were days where I just wanted to collapse on the ground because the workout was so mentally frustrating. There were days that I just didn’t go… those are the days where you have to reflect and remind yourself why you started and where you are going and remind yourself how far you have come. Surrounding yourself with people who are like you, helps keep you accountable when you can’t do it for yourself. But they also understand the times where you have to take a moment, take a rest day. Taking care of your mental health is just as important as your physical health. At Khrusos, we have coaches that understand what that means; taking care of the whole person. Mind, body, and soul.

I was so nervous walking in on my first day of class, but two years later I can say that walking into a box was the best thing I did for my health. I am stronger, more confident, and more aware of my body in general because of CrossFit.

What are you waiting for? I invite you to come to join our box. I promise you it will be one of the greatest decisions you’ve ever made!
